Today is Friday, probably the most celebrated weekday. However, why is that? I have over 1,000 friends on Facebook, and many of them celebrate this day by Thanking God It Is Friday. Many actually look forward to Fridays, starting from Monday, and the word Monday has become a pejorative for many.
TGIF has become indicative of the work week finally being over. I have spent some time asking friends from time to time, why they celebrate Fridays, and most have responded by bascially saying that they can't wait to get away from work.
I will be honest, I use to have the same anticipation for Fridays when I had my first and only job, which was at the Placencia Tourism Center. I couldn't wait to hang out and enjoy the weekend with my friends.
From talking to as much people as possible, I have found that when you look forward, with great anticipation, for Friday to come, there are some contributing factors to this. Here are some of the most common ones I got from talking to people:
1. You don't like your job.
2. You don't like the company you work for.
3. You don't like working with a particular co-worker(s)
4. The job does not challenge you.
5. The job is just to pay the bills, not what you really want to do.
One of the main drawback of this mindset is that you do not put your all into your work, you function mostly on auto-pilot, and this can be detrimental to your personal development, especially in acquring skills and experience that can help you get a better paying job, or even starting your own business.
I recommend that you take some time to figure out what it is about your work place, that makes you want to get out of it as fast as possible, and that temporary escape, each week is Friday and the weekend. This will massively help you become more productive, fine tune your skills, grow your experience and resume that will become beneficial to you. Remember, if you are not happy with what you are doing, you may want to consider moving on from your current job. Yes, it does require stepping outside your comfort zone and maybe even outside the box, but in the long run, it will be worth the effort and investment and you will live a much more fullfilling life in your workplace, or that business you started.
P.S. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the weekend, however, make it be a celebration of a successful and fullfilling work week.
